What should I check first?

Installed battery backwards. Melted handles off of jumper cables. fI turned the battery around and hooked it up the right way. Nothing happended. Would not start or even make a sound. Then I replaced some fuses and now it turns over lights radio etc works but it won't actually start....just sounds like it is going to. Its a 95 rodeo. What should I check now? Help!
