Could you make a decent argument for something you disagreed with?

Religion, , politics, abortion, economics. Stuff people have strong opinions on. The problem I see with a lot of people here and elsewhere is they can only see their own point of view. They're 100% right and everyone else is 100% wrong. The thing is when they talk about the opposing point of view they frame it in the most simplistic, naive, and silly ways. With this they reveal that they have no real understanding of the other point of view and thus an incomplete understanding of the issue itself; they're relegated to simply taking a 'side' and sticking to it no matter what. The best way to understand an issue is to be able to make a sound argument against your own point of view. This lets you see the flaws in the argument and not just sound like a partisan shill. Try it, won't you. ;-)
