Need help getting a fly wheel off of mercury outboard?

i was told to use a gear puller and tap on it .there was only a nut at the top i removed it is there something else to take off ? i cranked a gear puller down so tight it shattered into many pieces so i quit i was afraid i would damage the shaft. the motor is mercury 4 cyl. clic fifty --45 horse. anyone who could help me i would be greatly appreciative
